A couple of questions...

The Mongolian Blue Spot: Can anybody tell me how long it is expected to stay (my mother told me mine disappeared years ago but she couldn't tell me when)? And also whether all multi-racial kids get it or whether it is restricted to African/Caribbean mixed race kids?

Finn's isn't fading and I wondered whether it might stay forever? It's not a problem in the slightest, I'm just curious!

I've been wondering about this too! Is it like a mole or something else? Because if so then Indigo definitely has one, but I don't know enough about it!

Well, Finn's is like a blue bruise on his buttocks just where they meet the spine...mine was there too apparently. They come in various shapes and sizes and all over the body and are considered a birth mark in some countries (you can tell I've been googling!). If you google mongolian blue spot in images you can see some photos. If Indigo's is like a mole then it probably is one. We were told what it was by the midwife when Finn was born but I knew he would probably have one. It seems like some fade away and some stay...

It's weird isn't it?! The way most of them seem to be in the same area. I've had lots of comments already about Finn's 'bruise' and I get weary explaining it. I haven't yet been accused of bruising him!

I can understand that now he's 13 you don't discuss his bum!!

That is really interesting. It's one of those things I'd have never thought twice about except that other parents of mixed kids have talked about them before.

LOL! Of course, he's used to me approaching him with "Hey, I have an odd question..." so maybe that'll be one coming up soon. ;)

I do keep wondering if it's just a mole, but it's positioned in such a mongolian blue spot place, just slightly to the side at the base of her spine where her butt starts!

My son had one on his butt for a long time, it got me into trouble with my moms stupid, rural doctor who was convinced it was some kind of bruise...not the point LOL!...anyway, his never really faded. I'm not sure if it's still there or not since he's 13 now and we don't really discuss his butt. ;)

My oldest daughter who is four still has hers, our youngest never had one. My girls are half African American. I know my mom said my brother and I had them when we were kids, but doesn't remember when they faded, My dad's mom told my mom about them, (We are half Asian) So I guess Asian babies may also have them.

So I guess that answers my question in that it's not necessarily just African/Caribbean mix. It would be interesting to find out how many other multi racial mixes tend towards them. Thanks for that! Also really interesting in that most info (that I've heard so far) about them comes from family - excepting my midwife who was quite well versed on them. We should celebrate them - I might post a picture of Finn's later (when he's up and if he'll let me!) so everyone can see it. I think they're beautiful.

Most babies with brown skin have them. My daughter is Hondurian, her doctor said they will probably go away by the time she reaches 5 or 6. The biggest fear I have is someone thinking they are bruises. It is amazing how uneducated some childcare workers are about this.

I'm a nanny and have seen it on non-mixed kids as well, often on the lower back or on the buttocks.

First of all, let me welcome you to the community. :) I've been a member here for awhile, just haven't been posting too much.

Now, to answer your question about the Mongolian Blue Spot...

I have four kids -- 3 boys (ages 13, 7, and 6) and one girl (age 11, going on 21). All four of them were born with the MBS and they all faded by the time they reached their 6th birthday, though my youngest still has a just a little bit of a MBS still there. My kids are half African American (from their dad) and one fourth Italian, some French, Mexican and Native American (from me). I'm half Italian (from my birthmother), and French, Mexican, and Native American (from my birhtfather). I'm sure if you dig back in this community, you'll find a post I did with pictures of my kids.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that it was from the kids' pediatrician that I learned about the spot. I had no clue as to what it was...

Thank you for the welcome!

I guess the more we hear about it the more we know. And it also seems like although it is more common, it's not exclusive to brown skin and/or multi-racial children (and it does seem to be children that have one which fades before adulthood). We're lucky - maybe if more paediatricians were aware we'd have less of the questioning.

both of my son's were born with one on their bottom....I don't remember exactly when it went away but it was somewhere between 3 and 4 years old....but I remember a lot of people would think it was a bruise and ask why they had a bruise there....

my daughter's spot is on her back along her spine, she's going on 4 yrs in October....I used to get the same question all the time is that a bruise (mainly from my family, hispanic (PR)her father is West Indian)I would always have to explain to them that because she is of "mixed" race she has those spots. I honestly love her spots .....
